Take a case, change a life.

Justice North’s Private Attorney Involvement program expands the services Justice North can provide to our clients. Pro Bono attorneys are critical to ensuring equal access to the justice system for all families. Join us in closing the Justice Gap and protecting legal rights.

Closing the Justice Gap
with Private Attorney Involvement

Our Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) program is dedicated to providing pro bono legal services to community members in need. Through the expertise and dedication of our attorneys, paralegals, and legal support staff, we strive to protect the legal rights of all individuals, regardless of their financial circumstances. By bridging the gap between those who can afford legal representation and those who cannot, we aim to create a more just and equitable society.

Pro Bono Services for All

Our pro bono program offers various levels of free legal assistance to those who cannot afford representation, ensuring equal access to justice for all.

Ways to get involved

Virtual Clinics

PAI coordinates monthly empowerment clinics throughout Justice North’s service area. All clinics are virtual (by phone or Zoom). Currently, PAI has a Family Law Clinic that happens twice a month and a Social Security Clinic and Bankruptcy Clinic that both happen once a month. Each clinic is staffed by two or three volunteer attorneys and each attorney has three clients per clinic (1 hour time slots).

Advice & Counsel Consults

Advice and counsel consults are brief phone or in-person advice provided to a client by a volunteer attorney.  Typically, these cases require a short time commitment by the volunteer attorney between 20 minutes – 1 hour. These cases are not eligible for Judicare funds.

Pro Bono cases

A service to a client, free of charge, that requires a longer time commitment for assistance (either limited assistance or representation) in a number of civil legal areas including, but not limited to, unemployment matters/hearings, family matters, bankruptcy, real estate, estate planning, and more.

Judicare cases

PAI Volunteers are compensated at a reduced rate for cases that require a longer time commitment, i.e. divorce, custody, guardianship, bankruptcy, etc. (Advice and counsel cases are not eligible for Judicare funding at this time.)

Conflicts

At intake, Justice North checks all incoming cases for conflicts. All cases with a direct conflict with the staff program are triaged to PAI for potential placement. To ensure the confidentiality of client information, PAI staff offices separate from the staff program. PAI staff will only be able to access PAI cases and will not have access to staff program cases – the reverse is also true.

All PAI placements with volunteers are preceded by conflict checks of all parties.
